Fire Station 49: A Visit to One of Clearwater’s Busiest Stations

Today I had the opportunity to photograph Clearwater Fire Station 49 for a shadow box the crew is creating for a firefighter’s retirement. This was a coordinated effort with me and the on-duty lieutenant to get access to the trucks, engines and station.

Station 49 is located on Sky Harbor Drive, near the waterfront and just minutes from St. Pete–Clearwater International Airport. Built in 2003, it serves as one of Clearwater’s newest and most versatile fire stations.

The station houses an advanced life support (ALS) engine company, an ALS rescue unit and a marine unit. Its crews respond to a wide range of emergencies, from medical calls and structure fires to marine incidents in nearby waterways. Due to its location, Station 49 also plays a key role in assisting neighboring jurisdictions like Largo and even Tampa during mutual aid calls.

Clearwater Fire & Rescue operates eight stations across the city, covering more than 40 square miles and serving a population of roughly 137,000. That number spikes during the busy tourist and winter seasons. The department handles more than 20,000 calls annually!

What stood out to me during my visit was how meticulously prepared everything was. The apparatus bay was spotless. Trucks were shining. Gear was in place. There were no sirens blaring or crews rushing out, but you could feel the quiet readiness that defines this profession.

Photographing the station involved working closely with the shift lieutenant, who made sure the trucks were positioned where I needed them and that I had the access needed to get the shots. It was a short window, and the crews had duties to get back to, but they were incredibly accommodating.

There’s something humbling about being inside a fire station when it’s not in motion. You notice the details like the setup, the tools, the systems that keep everything running. You also get a sense of the people behind it all: calm, capable and prepared.

It was a quiet look at what readiness really means and a reminder of the people who live that word every single day.
